COURT TRIAL OF AL-SANADRA CASE

There were two court sessions held, one on 9th May 2018 and another on 16th May 2018 at Khartoum North court before Justice/ Abdeen Hamid Dhahi. The sessions were attended by all parties apart from the prosecutor. During the sessions, a number of defending witnesses delivered their testimonies and they were questioned by both lawyers’ panels and the judge. Court was adjourned to 22nd and 23rd May 2018 respectively.

Summary of the court sessions
On 9th May 2018, the session started at 11:00 AM (Sudan local time) at Khartoum North court before Justice/ Abdeen Hamid Dhahi. The prosecutor was not present in court. Five (5) defending witnesses delivered their testimonies and were questioned by the lawyers’ panels and judge.
Their names are;
6th defending witness: Mohammed Altoum Altayeeb, 32 years, jeweler, and resident of Alrehaidat/ Shorkaila village.
7th defending witness: Suliman Adam Idris, 50 years, trader, and resident of Al-Abbasiya.
8th defending witness: Ismail Abdelrahman Ibrahim, 44 years, teacher, and resident of Al-Abbasiya. He is a brother of the 8th defendant/ Alhadi Abdelrahman Ibrahim.
9th defending witness: Mahadi Elhaja Ibrahim, 22 years, self-employed, and resident of Al-Abbasiya. 10th defending witness: Mohammed Sharafeldin Hamad, 65 years, farmer, and resident of Almoweleh village.

On 16th May 2018, the session started at 11:00 AM (Sudan local time) at Khartoum North court before Justice/ Abdeen Hamid Dhahi. During the session, three (3) defending witnesses delivered their testimonies and were questioned by the lawyers’ panels and the judge in the absence of the prosecutor. Their names are given below;
11th defending witness: Ms. Shahrezad Mustafa Omer, 32 years, housewife and resident of Al-Abbasiya. She is a wife of the 5 th defendant/ Al-sadiq Mohammed Rahma.
12th defending witness: Adam Abdalla Maraheb, 58 years and a resident of Al-Abbasiya. 13th defending witness: Elian Adam Mohammed, 38 years, self-employed and resident of Al-Abbasiya.

The summary of their testimonies and cross-examination:
· The witnesses testified that the following defendants were with them in Al-Abbasiya or their villages on 2nd September 2016 the morning hours /day of Al-Sanadra incident (attack).

o Two testified in favour of the 4th Defendant/ Ahmed Al-Tayeb.
o Four testified in favour of the 5 th defendant/ Al-sadiq Mohammed Rahma (the husband to one of the witnesses).
o Two testified in favour of the 8 th defendant/ Alhadi Abdelrahman (A brother to one of the witnesses) o One for each defendant, 6th defendant/ Bardab Mohammed Abakar and 10th defendant/ Alzaki Saleh.

· None of the witnesses above was interrogated or delivered his testimony to the investigator. They were recently requested by the defendants’ relatives to appear at the court in this stage. At the end of the last session, the defendants’ panel requested the Judge for more sessions to enable the remaining witnesses deliver/submit their testimonies.
The judge responded by adjourning court to 22nd and 23rd May 2018 to hear the last submissions (testimonies) of the defending witnesses.

Recommendations/ Appeals HUDO urges all the concerned, especially:
· The Sudan court to conduct the trial fairly
·The activists, defenders and supporters to keep on attending court sessions
·The diplomatic missions and embassies to observe the court sessions
·The Sudan and international media to give full coverage for the court
