PRESS STATEMENT
(For immediate release)
ARREST OF ISMAIL BY MI IN DILLING, SUDAN
On 21st September 2019, the military intelligence (MI) in Dilling South
Kordufan State/ Nuba Mountains arrested Mr. Ismail Baleeya, 35 years old. They
took him to MI office at Dilling military headquarters and later released him
the same day evening. They detained him for seven hours and they physically and
psychologically tortured (beating and insulting) him. The arrest of Mr. Ismail
was due to a personal dispute between him and a military soldier at a
commercial bakery. Since the former president al-Bashir was toppled in April
2018, the current transitional government has not addressed the human rights
situation in the conflict areas. HUDO is very concerned about the situation of
civilians in conflict areas and calls upon;
· Sudan government to hold
to account those soldiers responsible for Mr. Ismail’s arrest and torture.
· Sudan government to end
the state of emergency in conflict areas which enables Sudan armed forces and
its militias to carry out arrests at will.
· Sudan government to stop
any kind of discriminative acts towards the violations against citizens from
conflict areas committed by security forces and militias.
· Sudan government to
respect its international obligations towards their citizens.
