Goldmine wells collapse in Talodi

On 15th and 17th March 2022, a goldmine wells in Elletaim -Talodi collapsed on the workers, killed and injured more than fifteen persons. No intervention or react were made from the police and authorities locally or nationally. Within three days two goldmine wells/ boreholes collapsed on the labourers working/ digging at Elletain goldmine of Talodi, the affected age groups range between 16 and 60 years old; On 15th March 2022, the first goldmine well collapsed resulted on twelve (12) people died and three (3) others were injured. On 17th March 2022, the second goldmine well collapse resulted on four (4) persons died. An activist in Talodi informed HUDO Centre that, the cases was reported to Talodi police but the police or government authorities did not respond yet the local authorities have an office in each of the goldmines for collecting levy/ taxes. Nevertheless, the general public put up a rescue operation and saved some lives. They also buried the dead and transported the injured people. All these happened while the authority was completely absent and no statement was released by them or even sympathy message towards the victims and their families. HUDO is very concerned about the safety of civilians/ workers in goldmines and calls upon;
· The authorities to consider the safety of people working in goldmines by putting in place safety measures, rescue team and medical service.
· The prosecutor in South Kordufan/ Nuba Mountains to ensure that there is rule of law.
· The CBOs to raise awareness about safety measures among goldmines workers.
· Sudan government to respect the constitutional rights of citizens
· Sudan government to respect its international obligations. HUDO Centre More information Elletaim gold mine (known also by Absaibea goldmine) is one of Talodi goldmines. Talodi is the capital of Talodi locality in Nuba Mountains/ South Kordufan.
1. The first well collapse victims are: A. Dead people: Ibrahim Hamad, Subahi Mansour, Haroun Teeya Abdelaziz, Ibrahim Suliman Eltoum, Abdalla Mohammed Ahmed, Abbas Madani, Ahmed Mohammed Abashar, Ahmed Abakar, Mohyeldin Maki Tutu, Mohammed Ali Khamis, Jebreil Mohammmed Albasha and Abduelrahman Eltoum. B. Injured people: Mohammed Suliman, Mohammed Hussein Khairalla and Abdalla Elseid Maki.
2. The second well collapse victims (all of them were died); Nasreldin Mohammed Ayoub, Ammar Abduelhadi Al-Bashir, Mohammed Abduelrahman Fahmey and Elgeily Mohammed. The wells/ boreholes collapse had happened repeatedly in gold mines allover Sudan and many lives were lost with no intervention or interact from authority to combat such kind of incidents. For instance within Nuba Mountains/ South Kordufan State;
· In November 2021, a well collapsed in Al-Karkar goldmine of Aleri Sharq/ East (Aleri locality) resulted on eight (8) deaths and sixteen people injured.
· January 2022, a well in Al-Jaghrour goldmine of Altartar (Tadhamoun locality) resulted in number of deaths and injured people. In other parts of Sudan;
· on 4th January 2021, a well collapsed at a goldmine near Halfa town (Northern State) resulted on seven (7) deaths and four (4) injured.
· on 28th December 2021, a well collapsed at Um-Deresaya goldmine near El-Nuhud (West Kordufan State) that resulted on about forty (40) deaths and some injured. The affected rights: Right to life
