Militia attacked police office in Umbrembeta

                               PRESS STATEMENT ARMED MILITIA ATTACKED POLICE OFFICE IN UMBREMBETA, SUDAN

On 13thNovember 2022, a group of armed militia attacked the police office in Umbrembeta and injured three policemen. The militias attacked in an attempt to free one of their own from the police custody who (suspect) was earlier arrested on robbery charges. The state’s security committee has not taken any measures since the incident happened. On 13thNovember 2022, a group of armed militias attacked Umbrembeta police office, injured three policemen and stole one AK-47 gun from one of the policemen. The names of the injured policemen are; Ayman Dokel, Abduelhameed Hassan and Gaidoum Azraq. The militias attacked police which had arrested one of their members (Majid Hassan Elzubair). The police arrested him on accusation that he had attacked and robbed a policeman (Khalid Kodi) of his gun on 3 rd November 2022 when the policeman was going back to his house from work. This suspect was arrested by police on the same day (13th November 2022) after injuring him on his leg because he was armed with a knife as he violently resisted the arrest. The attackers (militias) failed to free the suspect because the police had detained him at premises/ quarters of Sudan Armed Forces (SAF). After the attack, the suspect was taken by police to Elobeid town for medical treatment. At the same time, the policemen fled from their office premises to SAF premises seeking refuge and all police work stopped since then. Also, the policemen from Kawalib/ Nuba tribe (who are targeted repeatedly) left Umbrembeta to Dalami. Umbrembeta is a town in Abu-Kershola locality of South Kordufan State/ Nuba Mountains. Dalami is capital of Dalami locality in South Kordufan State/ Nuba Mountains and home of Kawalib tribe/ Nuba, its bout 25 km west Umbrembeta. Elobeid is the capital city of North Kordufan State and it’s about 160km North of Umbrembeta. HUDO Centre is very concerned about the security situation and the safety of civilians in conflict areas and calls upon;
· The security committee in South Kordufan State/ Nuba Mountains to take immediate action towards the state of insecurity in Abu-Kershola Locality. HUDO Centre
· The head of police in South Kordufan/ Nuba Mountains to ensure that the police in Abu-Kershola locality get the required support (manpower and equipment) to conduct their duties.
· The security committee in South Kordufan state to dissolve and disarm militias and safeguard the civilians.
