URGENT APPEAL
SAF ARRESTED MR. MOWAFAG SUBAHI IN
TALODI, SUDAN.
On 24th June 2023, Sudan
Armed Force (SAF) soldiers brutally arrested Mr. Mwafag Subahi while he was leaving the mosque at
Talodi town. The given reason for his arrest was that he was absent from the town for four (4)
days. He is still held incommunicado at Talodi military base. On 24th June 2023, Mr.
Mowafag Kamal-aldin Muhammad Ali Subahi was brutally arrested by eight (8) SAF
soldiers. He was arrested as he left the mosque after sunset prayers (Maghrib).
They hit (beat) him with the butts of the guns while asking him where he was
for the last four (4) day? Thereafter, they put him in a military vehicle (Land
Cruiser) and took him to Talodi military base. On 25thJune 2023 morning hours,
members of his family went to visit him but, they were not allowed to access
him. There are fears that he is being under torture. Activists from Talodi
informed that, “we believe the real reason of Mr. Mowafag’s arrest is due to
his previous activities (campaign) against gold mining companies using cyanide.
SAF was not happy with him and the campaign”.
HUDO Centre is concerned about
the safety of the civilian in Sudan during this difficult time of SAF and RSF
fight (conflict) and calls for the following;
·
The Sudan Armed Force in Talodi to immediately release Mr. Mowafag
unconditionally or refer him to the court of law if there is a genuine case
against him.
·
The SAF commander in South Kordufan State/ Nuba Mountains to investigate the
circumstances of Mr. Muwafag’s arrest and open the report to the public.
·
Sudan Armed Force to stop arresting civilians arbitrarily.
Additional information:
Mr. Mowafag Kamal-aldin Muhammad Ali Subahi is 22 years old. He is a farmer and
one of the young activists against the gold mining companies which are using
cyanide in Talodi. Talodi is the capital of Talodi locality in South Kordufan
state/Nuba Mountains.
Since 15th April 2023, there is a military confrontation (fighting) between SAF
and RSF in Khartoum and other states, this caused a lot of damage amongst
civilians, hundreds of deaths, thousands of injuries and many people were
displaced.
However, South Kordufan State has been
less affected but SAF continues to mistreat civilians. For instance;
·
On 19th April 2023, Mr. Mahana Hanai was brutally arrested by SAF in Talodi, he
was held incommunicado up to 25th April 2023 when he was released.
·
On 22nd May 2023, SAF soldiers brutally arrested Mr. Nagi Ahmed from a petrol
station in Talodi. Mr. Nagi was released on 25th May 2023 after undergoing
torture during the three (3) days detention.
