According to victims, eye witnesses and other sources that HUDO Centre interviewed, it is generally believed that the shooting incident was a revenge act by Jimeeya youth. The Jimeeya youth accused Bargo youth of killing their colleague, they were targeted and killed three Bargo youth who came to town from Odaya village. One of the victims revealed before his death that, the attackers were from Jimeeya tribe. Currently, the situation in Debaibat area is worrying because the police did not apprehend the perpetrators which created more fear of counter attacks. HUDO is very concerned about the situation of civilians in conflict areas and calls upon:
· Sudan government to address the state of insecurity in South Kordufan/ Nuba Mountains.
· Sudan government to ensure that the safety of civilians in conflict areas is guaranteed
· Sudan government to dissolve the government militias and disarm people with unlicensed firearms.
· Sudan government to conduct rule of law responsibly.
· Sudan government to respect its international obligations. HUDO Centre More information Tabaldiya is a village about 40 km Southeast of Debaibat town and Odaya village is about 30 km East of Debaibat. Debaibat and the two villages are in Elgouz locality of South Kordufan State. Jimeeya is an Arab tribe while Bargo is an African origin tribe. Case Background: Jimeeya and Bargo tribes were living together in Tabaldiya village up to last April 2021 when Borgo people accused Jimeeya youth of stealing their property. The issue was raised at the level of community leaders (Ommdas) and they agreed that, no one of Jimeeya youth should enter the Borgo living side. One day, some youth of Jimeeya breached the agreement and passed through Bargo area. They were assaulted by Bargo youth and one of Jimeeya youth was died. The two tribes have since activated the customary law that forced Bargo tribe to relocate themselves out of the village and they moved to other village called Odaya (more than 10 km far from Tabaldiya). On 1st June 2021 (the incident day), three of Bargo youth came on motorbike to Debaibat town for fueling and when they reached the petrol station they found a long queue, then they decided to have a cup of tea at the tea seller before accessing the queue. As they waited at the tea seller’s place, the attackers arrived and shot three of them dead (the first three names and underlined in the mentioned dead people above). Some of the wounded victims are: Hamad Jad-Kareem, Muneer Adam Elnour, Farha Eisa (the tea seller), Hamid Karazai, Adam and a deaf man known by Abu-Shaiba.
