The arrest came as a result of the statement issued by their association and submitted to the gold mining factory/ company’s management criticizing the use of cyanide without taking the necessary scientific measures. In their statement, they were requesting them to immediately close the factory which is located 15 km from the town and in the middle of the grazing area. The second day of their arrest, a case was opened against them under Article (69 – disturbance of public peace, 77 – public nuisance) of Sudan Criminal Code 1991 and were released on bail. HUDO calls upon; · Sudan government to take the youth and community concern and to avoid relying on some individuals.
· Talodi locality authority to value the community interest and their concern as well as to stop intimidating them while demanding their rights.
· The organization and lawyers to give the case the needed support and coverage. HUDO Centre 2 More information Within the last five years, the gold mining companies entered South Kordufan. Most of those companies came in to South Kordufan for collecting ore of the traditional mining sector but later they intend established factories using the cyanide without taking the safety measures or the expert personnel while neglecting the community’s concern in the absence of the local authority responsibility of protecting lives and environment. This caused deaths among human, animals and serious environmental effects.
Nevertheless a huge number of abortion/ miscarriage and congenital deformity among the new born occurred. However, many youth were arrested by NISS while they were trying to raise awareness among their communities about cyanide. For example: on 27th January 2017, four social activists were arrested by NISS at Aldoliama police checkpoint near Dilling town. The detainees were sensitizing people about toxic effects of cyanide in the gold mines.
